Clay Burgess – Executive Director Spiritual Formation

Main Scripture: Genesis 3:1–21 (ESV)
4 foundations for understanding our faith:
We are created.
We are broken.
We can be fixed.
We are on our way toward something better.

Crafty is not a negative term but suggests wisdom and cleverness.

Revelation 12:9 (ESV)
Genesis 3:2-3 (ESV)
Genesis 2:17 (ESV)
Genesis 3:4 (ESV)

“A device of Satan is to present the bait and hide the hook.” (Puritan Thomas Brooks, Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices, 1652)

John 8:44 (ESV)
John 10:10 (ESV)
Genesis 3:5 (ESV)

“We are either reminding ourselves of the seriousness of sin or we are working to convince ourselves that our sin isn’t that sinful after all.” (Paul David Tripp, Do You Believe?, 2021)

Genesis 3:6 (ESV)

“We sin not because we don’t love Christ at all but because we don’t love him above all.” (Bryan Chapell, Unlimited Grace, 2016)

Genesis 3:7 (ESV)

Romans 5:12 (ESV)
Genesis 3:15 (ESV)
Romans 5:19 (ESV)

BIG IDEA:  THE FALL IS FATAL, BUT NOT FINAL

Two Responses to Sin:
Try to cover it up and deal with the consequences Psalms 32: 2-4 (ESV)
Confess to God and enjoy the benefits Psalms 32:1 (ESV) & Psalms 32:5 (ESV)

Connecting keeps you from being vulnerable and isolated.  It builds in accountability and encouragement into your life.

Serving keeps you from being self-centered and self-absorbed.  Being others-oriented keeps you outward focused and mission minded.

Giving keeps the things you own from owning you.  It reminds you that stuff is not a substitute for a savior.
